How To Use This Site
Audio formats
Two formats are used on this site - mp3 and RealPlayer.  The mp3 format used is 128 kbits/sec, 44 kHz, which is near CD quality.  The RealPlayer version plays in real time, even with a 56K modem, with quality that is somewhat less than the mp3 version.  You may want to listen to the CDs using the RealPlayer versions, then download the mp3 version to hear the sound quality.

Look here for a little more information about audio.

General
On each CD, pieces of selected songs have been converted to mp3 and/or RealPlayer format.   You will see a musical note to the left of a song if it can be played.  Clicking on the note will load (and hopefully play) a portion of the song.  Look at the top of the column to see the format.  If the icon at the top of the column has a red box around it, a compilation of all of the short pieces is available.  Click on the icon to play it.  For some CDs, a RealPlayer version of the entire CD is available.  You will see the RealPlayer icon next to the CD title if it is available.

    Wave logo
Wave files are the native format for audio storage for Windows-based computers, and can be played by most others.  Wave files are a point-by-point representation of the audio signal, similar to the format used by CDs.  Unfortunately, a high fidelity wave file is about 10MB per minute of play time.

MP3 Logo
MP3 files load much quicker with nearly the same fidelity as full fidelity wave files, but requires a media player that recognizes MP3 format.  Later versions of Windows and Internet Explorer have a built-in mp3 player.  A free standalone program that can be set up to play directly from your browser is Winamp.  It also plays wave files.

Real Audio Logo
Real Audio is the streaming format for the internet.  You can listen to audio in real time due to the very high level of compression.  The quality has been continually improving, and is now quite listenable.  This is another free piece of software that is available as a standalone program.  You must have Real Audio 8 to use the RealAudio files on this site.
